Οι Bill Drummond & Jimmy Cauty φάνηκε ότι διέλυσαν οριστικά το σχήμα το 1997, μετά την έκδοση του single "Fuck The Millennium" (Βρετανία #28), που κι αυτό βγήκε με το όνομα 2K και όχι KLF. Είπαν μάλιστα τότε ότι δεν πρόκειται να ξαναφανούν, αν δεν επικρατήσει παγκόσμια ειρήνη στον πλανήτη Γη.
Φέτος, μόνο στα πρόθυρα παγκόσμιας ειρήνης δεν βρισκόμαστε με όλα όσα συμβαίνουν στη Μέση Ανατολή, στην Υεμένη, αλλά και με τη διαρκώς αυξανόμενη ένταση στη Βόρεια Κορέα, στο Κατάρ και στα σύνορα Κίνας-Μπουτάν. Παρά ταύτα, οι KLF επιστρέφουν.
Το τι ακριβώς σκοπεύουν να κάνουν, όμως, παραμένει αίνιγμα. Το μόνο σίγουρο, ότι στις 23 Αυγούστου βγαίνει από τον εκδοτικό οίκο Faber & Faber ένα βιβλίο με τίτλο 2023: A Trilogy, για το οποίο πάντως δεν έχει δοθεί καμία επεξήγηση ως προς το τι θα περιέχει, πέρα από μια ακατανόητη ανακοίνωση σχετικά με μια παλιά ιστορία τέλους που διηγούνται από καιρούς αμνημόνευτους οι Δικαιωμένοι Αρχαίοι της Mu Mu.
Για την ίδια ωστόσο μέρα, έχει ανακοινωθεί και ένα event ονόματι Liverpool: Welcome to the Dark Ages, το οποίο περιγράφεται -εξίσου αινιγματικά- ως μια «3ήμερη κατάσταση». Κάθε μέρα έχει πάντως κι έναν διαφορετικό τίτλο, οπότε υπάρχει τουλάχιστον ένας μπούσουλας ως προς το θεματικό περιεχόμενο. Η 23η Αυγούστου λέγεται Why Did the K Foundation Burn A Million Quid?, η 24η 2023: What The Fuck Is Going On?, ενώ η 25η έχει τίτλο The Rites of MuMufication. Υπάρχει μάλιστα και σαφής προειδοποίηση, ότι δεν θα υπάρξει ζωντανή εκτέλεση μουσικής, γεγονός που καταρρίπτει τις προσδοκίες όσων έλπιζαν να ξαναδούν τους KLF live.
Για κάθε μέρα θα εκδοθούν μόλις 400 εισιτήρια (και δεν θα υπάρξει guest list ούτε καν για δημοσιογράφους), οι δε κάτοχοί τους ενημερώνονται ότι με την αγορά τους γίνονται εθελοντές, οπότε θα πρέπει να αποδεχθούν ότι θα τους ζητηθεί «να εκτελέσουν καθήκοντα».

Περί KLF...
Την πρώτη Ιανουαρίου του 1987 ένας κιθαρίστας και πρώην φοιτητής της Καλών τεχνών (ο Jimmy Cuty) και ένας καταξιωμένος καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής (ο Bill Drummond) έφτιαξαν ένα συγκρότημα ως καλλιτεχνικό πρότζεκτ, με σκοπό να κατακτήσουν την κορυφή.
Και τα κατάφεραν με το πρώτο τους single, Doctorin The Tardis, ως Timelords. Τη νούμερο ένα επιτυχία ακολούθησε ένας βιβλίο οδηγιών για το «πώς μπορείς να κάνεις μία νούμερο ένα επιτυχία με εύκολο τρόπο» (The Manual: How to Have a Number One the Easy Way) και μετά άλλαξαν όνομα, έγιναν The Justified Ancient of MuMu, γράφοντας κομμάτια με τίτλο Kylie Said to Jason (για την Kylie Minogue και τον Jason Donovan που τότε ήταν ζευγάρι στο σίριαλ Neighbours).
Και μετά έγιναν The KLF, ένα από τα πιο ανατρεπτικά ποπ συγκροτήματα που εμφανίστηκαν ποτέ, με ένα από τα καλύτερα ambient άλμπουμ όλων των εποχών, έναν ανεπανάληπτο dance δίσκο που χαρακτήρισε τα ’90s, με τεράστιες επιτυχίες, με συνεργασίες με γερασμένες Αμερικανίδες τραγουδίστριες της country, συναρπαστικές εμφανίσεις με τους Extreme Noise Terror στα Brit Awards, με πυροβολισμούς στο κοινό από αληθινό πολυβόλο με άσφαιρα πυρά -και το πέταγμα ενός νεκρού προβάτου στο πάρτι που ακολούθησε- και ένα ακόμα πιο απρόβλεπτο τέλος το 1992, καταργώντας ολόκληρη τη δισκογραφία τους. Λίγο μετά το τέλος τους ως συγκρότημα έφτιαξαν το K Foundation και έγιναν εικαστικοί, με μοναδικό έργο τους το K Foundation Burn A Million Quid τον Αύγουστο του 1994, μια περφόρμανς στην οποία έκαψαν ένα εκατομμύριο λίρες, τα κέρδη τους ως KLF. Το συγκρότημα βραβεύθηκε ως το καλύτερο για το 1992 και στα Brit awards, τρόλαραν live το κοινό με μία αλλού για αλλού εκτέλεση του κομματιού "3AM Eternal". Στη συνέχεια άφησαν ένα σφαγμένο αρνί στο γκαλά των εκδηλώσεων με την επιγραφή "πέθανα για εσένα".
Στις 23 Αυγούστου 1994 έκαψαν ένα εκατομμύριο αγγλικές λίρες και τις στάχτες τις έκαναν ένα τούβλο. Μετά αποχώρησαν από το προσκήνιο διαγράφοντας (επισήμως) την έως τότε δουλειά τους, που θα τους επέφερε εκατομμύρια μεταγενέστερα, για να επιστρέψουν όπως ανέφεραν μετά από 23 χρόνια (εφέτος δηλαδή).
Τα εισιτήρια φυσικά εξαντλήθηκαν, αλλά όπως αναφέρεται χαρακτηριστικά, οι KLF δεν θα παρουσιάσουν ξανά μουσική, αλλά φιλμ και βιβλίο.

Welcome To The Dark Ages
The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu will have completed their The Twenty Three Year Moratorium on 23rd August 2017. The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu will be marking this completion in a number of ways.
Firstly with the publication of their novel 2023. 2023 will be published by Faber & Faber on 23rd August. All review copies will be delivered on or after that date.
Secondly, over three days in the UK city of Liverpool, they will host:
Liverpool: Welcome To The Dark Ages.
The three days are the 23rd, 24th and 25th August 2017. The titles of each of these three days are:
Day One – Why Did The K Foundation Burn A Million Quid?
Day Two – 2023: What The Fuuk Is Going On?
Day Three – The Rites of MuMufication.
There will only be 400 tickets available.
There are no guest lists.
There are no press passes.
Every one of the 400 ticket holders will be expected to be Volunteers.

When the last customer’s copy has been stamped The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, will leave the shop; climb back into their Ice Kream Van; drive away and disappear.
2023 has been described as ‘a utopian costume drama set in the near future written in the recent past.’
No review copies of this book are available until the day of publication.

Return of the KLF: ‘They were agents of chaos. Now the world they anticipated is here’
Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty hijacked pop in the 1980s and 90s with outlandish antics involving lasers, house music, a Viking longship and a million-pound bonfire. Andrew Harrison revisits the chaos – and talks to their former partners in crime
Drummond and Cauty stole from the Beatles and Abba, then sneaked illegal-rave culture on to Top of the Pops. They memorably hijacked the 1992 Brit awards as a symbolic massacre-suicide for the entire music industry. In using and abusing graffiti and money as contestable art objects, they anticipated the work of Damien Hirst and Banksy. The raw material of Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson’s esoteric Illuminatus! trilogy fed into their alter egos, the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu.
Now as we reach the symbolic 23rd anniversary of the cash-sacrifice on Jura – 23 being a totemic figure in Illuminatus! numerology and thus in JAMMs lore – the KLF are back. Gnomic flyposters promise a KLF book and an event in August “unearthing aspects of the 2023 trilogy across Liverpool”, where Drummond’s career began. The Illuminati, once a private fixation for Drummond, Cauty and the 1970s counterculture, have become a pop-culture obsession (see Beyoncé and her pyramid hand gestures). The KLF, AKA The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu, were always agents of chaos. Now the world they anticipated is here.
Lasers, strobes and house beats might have defined the KLF but they are perhaps better understood as a 70s arts lab time-warped forward to the late 80s. Bill Drummond’s formative years were spent as a carpenter and set-builder; the avant garde actor and director Ken Campbell recruited him for his alternative Science Fiction Theatre of Liverpool in 1976, hiring him to design and build staging for a hugely ambitious, 12-hour-long adaptation of Illuminatus! As it happens, Drummond was 23 at the time.
